NHL trade review: Flames acquire Smith from Coyotes for Johnson, prospect

The Calgary Flames have acquired goaltender Mike Smith from the Arizona Coyotes in exchange for goalie Chad Johnson, defenseman Brandon Hickey and a conditional 2018 3rd rounder.

The Flames have been looking for a starting goalie, and were looking to acquire Marc-Andre Fleury from the Pittsburgh Penguins. Smith is 35, but was an all-star this year, with a .914 SV% and a GAA of 2.92. He\’s shown he can be a reliable goalie, with a career SV% of .913 and a 2.70 GAA for the Coyotes (Arizona and Phoenix), Tampa Bay Lightning and Dallas Stars. Johnson is a UFA, so the Coyotes just got his rights. Hickey is still in college, but might make the NHL one day.

The Coyotes have been looking to sell Smith and his $4.5 cap hit (which the Coyotes will retain a fourth of, at $1.4 million, reported Sarah McLellan of azcentral sports), and the Flames were a perfect fit. The Coyotes might want to sign Johnson to a cheap deal, just for a year.

Johnson, 31, had a 2.59 GAA and a SV% of .910 in 36 games this season. He has a career SV% of .915 with a 2.44 GAA in 137 games in his career for the Flames, New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Buffalo Sabres, Boston Bruins, and actually the Coyotes (he played with Phoenix in 2012-13).

They get a prospect in Hickey who scored 15 points (four goals and 11 assists) in 35 games for Boston University at age 21. He has some upside, so we\’ll see what happens.

The 3rd rounder is solid, and can become a second rounder if the Flames make the playoffs for the second consecutive season.
