NHL trade review: Blackhawks, Blue Jackets make Panarin, Saad swap

The Chicago Blackhawks have acquired LW Brandon Saad, G Anton Forsberg and a 5th round draft pick in 2018 from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for LW Artemi Panarin, F Tyler Motte and a sixth rounder in 2017.

Panarin, 25, won the Calder trophy (best rookie) in 2015-16 at the age of 24. Playing with star Patrick Kane, Panarin scored an amazing 74 points (31 goals and 43 assists) in 82 games in 2016-17. He has 151 points (61 goals and 90 assists) in his 162 game career, all for Chicago.

\”We thank Artemi for the immediate impact he made on our lineup during his seamless transition to the NHL,\” GM Stan Bowman told NHL.com. His rookie year will always rank among the best in franchise history and his exciting style of play provided many memorable moments for our fans during his two seasons as a member of the team.\”

Motte, 22, made his NHL debut in 2016-17, scoring four goals and three assists in 33 games. He seems like a good player, but isn\’t recognized over big names in this trade.

Saad, 24, won two Stanley Cups as a member of the Blackhawks before being traded to Columbus. He scored 53 points (24 goals and 29 assists) in 82 games this year. He has 126 points (52 goals and 74 assists) in 208 career NHL games for the Blue Jackets and Blackhawks.

Forsberg, 24, played just one game this season, allowing four goals on 27 shots. He has a career SV% of .879 and a GAA of 4.02 in 10 career NHL games, all for Columbus.

I think Columbus wins this trade. Both Saad and Panarin have $6 million cap hits, but I think Panarin is better. Also, I view that Motte is better than Forsberg, so that also favors CBJ. The draft picks are in late rounds, so it doesn\’t matter much.
