The Seattle Mariners have acquired corner infielder Ryon Healy from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for RHP Emilio Pagan and INF Alex Campos.
The Mariners have been looking for a 1B, since their 1Bs last year, Danny Valencia and Yonder Alonso (who are both former A\’s themselves) are free agents. Healy is just 25, so the M\’s will have him for lots of years. It\’s a really good deal for them, and his rookie season stats will show that.
Healy, 25, hit 25 homers, 78 RBIs, and had a batting average of .271 in 605 Plate Appearances this year. In his two year MLB career, both for Oakland, Healy has a .282 batting average, 38 homers and 115 RBIs in 888 Plate Appearances.
I still am having trouble processing why the A\’s made this trade. Campos was ranked as their 15th best prospect. Another infielder, Chris Torres, is their 7th best prospect and would make more sense for Oakland. But with prospects up the middle like Jorge Mateo and Frankie Barreto, they probably should\’ve targeted another prospect with a different position. Pagan is also young at 26, and can become a solid bullpen arm for Oakland in 2018. With fellow rookies Matt Olsen and Matt Chapman, the other corner infielders, coming off great seasons, Healy was being shopped. But, I doubted a trade would actually be made. I think this shows the full-on rebuild the A\’s are in.
Pagan, 26, made his MLB debut in 2017, with a 3.22 ERA, 56 strikeouts and a WHIP of 0.934.
Campos, 18, played in the Dominican Summer league this past year. He had a .290 batting average, two homers, 26 RBIs and seven stolen bases in 254 Plate Appearances.
I clearly think that the Mariners win this trade. They get a young slugger for a very young prospect who we have no idea what he\’ll turn out to be, and a young reliever yet to show more than a middle relief talent.
