MLB trade review: Padres acquire Galvis

The San Diego Padres have acquired SS Freddy Galvis from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for RHP Enyel De Los Santos, the Padres 13th best prospect.

The Padres are looking to contend in 2019. Though they only get a year of Galvis, they could re-sign him, or be a surprise team in 2018. Anyway, they needed a SS. Galvis works.

Galvis, 28, had a .255 batting average, 12 homers, 61 RBIs and 14 steals in 663 Plate Appearances for the Phillies. Fun fact: Galvis was one of five MLB players to play in all 162 games in 2017. The others are free agents Eric Hosmer and Alcides Escobar (who both did it with the Royals, and were/are still in talks with the Padres), the Rangers Roughned Odor, and the Reds Joey Votto, who was an MVP candidate. In his MLB career, all in Philly, Galvis has a batting average of .245, plus 52 homers, 233 RBIs and 43 stolen bases in 2440 Plate Appearances.

The Phillies don\’t need Galvis with prospect J.P. Crawford ready for 2017. De Los Santos is going to be their 9th best prospect.

De Los Santos, 21, has a 3.70 ERA, a WHIP of 1.21, plus 306 strikeouts in 333.1 innings in his minor league career.

I think the Padres win this deal. They got what they needed, and didn\’t need De Los Santos. Same thing goes for the Phillies, but I think it\’s a 51/49 deal, with the Padres coming up on top.
