The Oakland Athletics have acquired RHP Cory Gearrin from the Texas Rangers in exchange for RHPs Abdiel Mendoza and Teodoro Ortega.
For the A\’s, they\’ve been adding to their bullpen this trading season, adding Jeurys Familia, Shawn Kelley and Fernando Rodney. Gearrin, while not as big of a name as the previous three, can still help the pen down the stretch as the A\’s try to make the playoffs.
Gearrin, 32, has a 3.51 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and 51 strikeouts in 51.1 innings for the Rangers and San Fransisco Giants this year. In his MLB career for the Rangers, Giants and Atlanta Braves, Gearrin has a 3.48 ERA with a WHIP of 1.27, plus 233 strikeouts in 240.2 innings.
For the Rangers, Gearrin is just an arm that they don\’t need for the rest of the season, as they are adding more arms due to September call-ups tomorrow. They get two minor leaguers for Gearrin.
Mendoza, 19, has a 3.32 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 41 strikeouts in 57 innings for Low-A this year.
Ortega, 18, has a 2.11 ERA with a .89 WHIP and 48 strikeouts in 42.2 innings in rookie league this year, his first professional season.
