The Minnesota Twins have acquired RHP Sergio Romo, RHP Chris Vallimont and a player to be named later for 1B Lewin Diaz.
I love this trade for the Twins on first reaction. Even if it was Romo for Diaz straight up it would be decent. Romo is a veteran closer with postseason success. Vallimont is ranked as the Marlins 23rd best prospect by MLB Pipeline, and that is a better ranking than Diaz on the Twins, which doesn\’t necessarily mean that Vallimont is better than Diaz, but it is still good value for the Twins getting Romo and a PTBNL as well. Romo has a 3.09 career playoff ERA, and won the World Series in 2010, 2012 and 2014, not allowing a run in six innings with three saves over the three fall classics. Vallimont was a 5th round pick in 2018.
Romo, has a 3.58 ERA with 33 strikeouts and 17 saves in 37.2 innings for the Marlins this year. In his MLB career for the Marlins, San Francisco Giants, Tampa Bay Rays and Los Angeles Dodgers, Romo has a 2.91 ERA with 665 strikeouts and 126 saves in 600.1 innings.
Vallimont, 22, has a 3.16 ERA with 122 strikeouts in 105.1 innings for Single-A Clinton and High-A Jupiter this year. In his two year minor league career, he has a 3.82 ERA with 142 strikeouts in 134.1 innings.
The Marlins are probably very high on Diaz and must have an issue with Vallimont, or this trade doesn\’t make any sense. Diaz has had a very good minor league season, and he is the same age as Vallimont, so I see some appeal there, but including both Romo and Vallimont doesn\’t make sense.
Diaz, 22, has a .297 batting average with 19 homers and 61 RBIs in 369 Plate Appearances for High-A Fort Myers and AA Pensacola this year. In his minor league career, he has a .273 average with 55 homers and 248 RBIs in 1728 Plate Appearances.
