The Atlanta Braves have acquired RHP Mark Melancon from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for RHP Daniel Winkler and RHP Tristan Beck.
The Braves have been improving their bullpen, acquiring Melancon to go along with Shane Greene. Melancon hasn\’t been the closer since losing the job in 2017, but has had a good 2018 and 2019. The Braves take on the rest of his contract (2019 and 2020), which is a price to pay in its own, and trade two pitchers, including a top 20 prospect in Beck.
Melancon, 34, has a 3.50 ERA with 44 strikeouts and one save in 46.1 innings for the Giants this year. In his MLB career for the Giants, Pittsburgh Pirates, Washington Nationals, New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox and Houston Astros, Melancon has a 2.82 ERA with 511 strikeouts with 183 saves in 562.1 innings.
The Giants are buying and selling, trading Sam Dyson along with Melancon, and acquiring Scooter Gennett. Melancon still has a lot of money left owed to him, so they get his contract out of the way. They also get Winkler, a depth bullpen piece and Beck, Atlanta\’s 17th best prospect, per MLB Pipeline.
Winkler, 29, has a 4.98 ERA with 22 strikeouts in 21.2 innings for the Braves this year. In his MLB career, all in Atlanta, Winkler has a 3.68 ERA with 115 strikeouts in 100.1 innings.
Beck, 23, has a 5.32 ERA with 53 strikeouts in 45.2 innings for High-A Florida and the Gulf Coast Braves. In his minor league career, Beck has a 5.03 ERA with 58 strikeouts in 48.1 innings.
