The Chicago Cubs have acquired 3B/RF Nick Castellanos from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for RHP Paul Richan and RHP Alex Lange.
Castellanos is a good bat that the Cubs are adding, but he also isn\’t a good fielder and is a free agent at the end of the year. Is he a natural third baseman but the team moved him to right field when the team acquired Jeimer Candelario from Chicago in 2017. He will improve the Cubs\’ lineup and can come off the bench.
Castellanos, 27, has a .273 average with 11 home runs and 37 RBIs in 439 Plate Appearances for the Tigers this year. In his MLB career, all in Detroit, Castellanos has a .274 average with 104 homers and 424 RBIs in 3421 Plate Appearances.
The Tigers might not have signed Castellanos after the season, and if they do want to sign him, they still can after the year. In return, they get two top 30 prospects in Richan (16th) and Lange (23rd).
Richan, 22, has a 3.97 ERA with 86 strikeouts in 93 innings for High-A Myrtle Beach this year. In his two year minor league career, the 2018 2nd rounder has a 3.52 ERA with 117 strikeouts in 122.2 innings.
Lange, 23, has a 5.82 ERA with 79 strikeouts in 86.2 innings for High-A Myrtle Beach and AA Tennessee this year. In his minor league career, Lange has a 4.62 ERA with 193 strikeouts in 213.1 innings.
