The Arizona Diamondbacks have acquired RHP Mike Leake and cash from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for INF Jose Caballero.
Leake is a veteran starer that will replace Zack Greinke in the Arizona rotation. He is under contract through 2020, with an option for 2021. He has been a serviceable pitcher throughout his career, and has been hot lately, recently flirting with a perfect game.
Leake, 31, has a 4.40 ERA with 100 strikeouts in 137 innings this year. In his MLB career for the Mariners, St, Louis Cardinals, San Francisco Giants and Cincinnati Reds, Leake has a 4.05 ERA with 1204 strikeouts in 1769 innings.
The Mariners are rebuilding, and trading Leake and unloading some salary was a no-brainer. The prospect they get in return, Caballero, isn\’t a top 30 prospect in Arizona\’s system.
Caballero, 22, has a .268 average with three homers, 12 RBIs and 28 stolen bases in 198 Plate Appearances for High-A Visalia. In his minor league career, Caballero has a .292 average with 14 homers, 67 RBIs and 49 stolen bases in 657 Plate Appearances.
