NHL Trade Review: Canucks acquire Toffoli

The Vancouver Canucks have acquired forward Tyler Toffoli from the Los Angeles Kings in exchange for forwards Tim Schaller and Tyler Madden, plus a 2020 second round pick and a conditional 2022 4th round pick. The Kings only get the last pick if Toffoli, a pending UFA, re-signs with Vancouver.

The Canucks don\’t necessarily need scoring, they are tied for eighth in the league in goals scored. However, you can always use another goal scorer on your team. Toffoli is a pure rental, which saves them their first round pick. The JT Miller trade cost them their first this year, but they still have one next season. They give up the second rounder which will likely be a late pick. Schaller is a depth forward who is having a bad season, with just one assist in 51 games and a career worst -13 rating. Madden, a 2018 third round pick, is having a great season at Northeastern. He projects as a middle-six forward. He is still 20, though. Toffoli had a down year in 2018-19, but has bounced back, already tying his point total from last season. He is on pace for a 20 goal season. Unless he goes on a tear, he will not reach 30 goals for the first time since 2015-16.

Toffoli, 27, has scored 18 goals with 16 assists for 34 points in 58 games for the Kings this year. In his NHL career, all in Los Angeles, Toffoli has scored 139 goals with 151 assists for 290 points in 515 games. He carries a $4.6 million cap hit.

The Kings tried to sell high on Toffoli following his hat-trick in the Stadium Series win vs Colorado. It didn\’t really work, as they failed to receive a first round pick. The market for forwards will be higher with a lower quality of players on the market. Behind Chris Kreider, Toffoli might be the best rental forward available. There is a good chance that if L.A. waited until Monday\’s deadline, they could have gotten a higher price.

Schaller, 29, is also a pending free agent. He has scored five goals with an assist for six points in 51 games for the Canucks this season. In his NHL career for the Canucks, Boston Bruins and Buffalo Sabres, Schaller has scored 29 goals with 28 assists for 57 points in 274 games. He carries a $1.9 million cap hit.

Madden, 20, has scored 19 goals with 18 assists for 37 points in 27 games for Northeastern University. In his two year career at Northeastern Madden has scored 31 goals with 34 assists for 65 points in 63 games.
