NHL Trade Review: Penguins get Marleau

From NBC Sports

The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired forward Patrick Marleau from the San Jose Sharks for a conditional 2021 third round pick. If Pittsburgh wins the Stanley Cup this year, the pick becomes a 2021 second rounder.

Marleau is the definition of a veteran. He is 40 years old, and has played over 1,700 games with over 1,000 points in his career. In his 22 year career, 20 were with San Jose. He has not produced in his return to to San Jose after a stint in Toronto. The team is terrible this year. Marleau is a pending UFA on a league minimum contract, so they can get a little bit more for him. While he has not won a Stanley Cup yet, this could be his last chance. The Penguins are a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. His experience gets him a better return. Getting a third, maybe second round pick for a 40 year old with 20 points this year is a really good deal for the Sharks. The Penguins don\’t need the pick, and Marleau can be like a Chris Kunitz type player for them.

Marleau, 40, has scored 10 goals with 10 assists for 20 points in 58 games for the Sharks this year. In his very long career for the Sharks and Toronto Maple Leafs Marleau has scored 561 goals with 625 assists for 1,186 points in 1,715 games.
