NHL Trade Review: Senators acquire Peca

The Ottawa Senators have acquired forward Matthew Peca from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for forward Aaron Luchuk and a 2020 7th round draft pick.

Peca was a promising depth forward entering the 2019-20 season. He has had a rough year, playing mostly in the AHL, and not putting up many points there. But, the Senators are taking a chance on him. He could be a candidate to be Ottawa\’s Anthony Duclair acquisition this year. The team traded away Jean-Gabriel Pageau and Tyler Ennis today, so they have open roster spots. Peca is worth a bottom six shot. A 7th round pick is nothing, and that\’s the main part of the deal. Luchuk is an ECHL player that the Sens acquired on February 19th from the Leafs for Max Veronneau.

Peca, 26, has no points in five NHL games this year. He has scored four goals with nine assists for 13 points in 34 games for the AHL\’s Laval Rocket this year. In his NHL career for the Canadiens and Tampa Bay Lightning Peca has scored six goals with 11 assists for 17 points in 64 games.

Luchuk, 22, has no points in three AHL games for the Toronto Marlies this year. In 46 games for the ECHL\’s Brampton Beast and Newfoundland Growlers Luchuk has scored 19 goals with 31 assists for 50 points.
