NHL news: Rangers buy out contract of Girardi

The New York Rangers have bought out the contract of defenseman Dan Girardi. This isn\’t surprising to many, since both Girardi and fellow defenseman Marc Staal are both on bad contracts, and one of them were expected to be bought out. I thought it would be Staal, but the Rangers thought he\’s better than Girardi. But it\’s also a little surprising they bought him out with defenseman Kevin Klein most likely retiring.

Girardi, 33, scored 15 points (four goals and 11 assists) with 107 hits and 166 blocked shots in 63 games this year. He has 230 career points (46 goals and 184 assists), 1762 hits and 1650 blocked shots in 788 games over his 11 year NHL career, all for the Blueshirts.

\”I want to thank all of the Blueshirt faithful. You are one of the best and most passionate fan bases in the NHL. I appreciate your support over the years,\” Girardi said in a message released by the team [full message here].

\”I would like to thank Dan for everything he has given of himself to the Rangers over 11 seasons. He has become one of the key contributors to our success over the past decade. We have the utmost respect for Dan and wish him all the best going forward,\” Rangers GM Jeff Gorton said via Rangers Twitter.

Girardi was signed through 2022-23, with a cap hit of $5.5 million. His cap hit will be $2.61 million this next year, $3.61 million for the next two years, and  $1.11 million for the last three. It will cost the Rangers $1.11 million each year for the next six seasons.

MLB news: Gonzalez, Cabrera land on DL

We have even more injuries. Today, the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets lost a part of their team to the 10-day DL. The Dodgers lost 1B Adrian Gonzalez (back), and the Mets lost SS Asdrubal Cabrera (thumb).

Gonzalez, 35, has a .255 batting average, one homer and 23 RBIs in 182 Plate Appearances this season. He has a career batting average of .289, 309 homers and 1169 RBIs in 7789 Plate Appearances with the Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, San Diego Padres and Texas Rangers. He\’s a five all-star, four time gold glove and two time silver slugger.

To replace Gonzalez, the Dodgers activated CF Joc Pederson from the 7-day concussion DL. Pederson, 25, has a .200 batting average, two homers and 11 RBIs in 123 Plate Appearances. He has a career batting average of .222 with 53 homers, 133 RBIs and 10 steals in 1222 Plate Appearances, all with Los Angeles.

Cabrera, 31, has a .244 batting average, six homers, 20 RBIs and three steals in 196 Plate Appearances this year. He has a career .268 batting average with 131 HRs, 591 RBIs and 86 stolen bases in 5385 Plate Appearances with the Mets, Tampa Bay Rays, Washington Nationals and Cleveland Indians.

To replace Cabrera, the Mets recalled INF T.J. Rivera from the Las Vegas 51s (AAA). Rivera, 28, has a .255 batting average, two homers, 13 RBIs and one steal in 114 Plate Appearances this year. He has a career .295 batting average, five homers, 29 RBIs and that one stolen base in 227 Plate Appearances, all for the Mets.

McCullers is now the 4th Astros starter currently on the DL. In fact, it\’s the Astros top four starters in the DL. McCullers joins ace Dallas Keuchel, Collin McHugh and Charlie Morton.
