NHL trade review: Flames acquire Lazar from Sens

The Calgary Flames have acquired winger Curtis Lazar and defenseman Mike Kostka from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for defenseman Jyrki Jokkipakka and a second round pick. Let\’s get into details.
The Flames saw that the Sens had Lazar, a prospect who looks like a bust so far, on their trading block. They\’re probably thinking a change of scenery is what he needs. I think giving up Jokkipakka, who was acquired last trade deadline from the Dallas Stars, was ok, but a second as well might cross the line, but no far. Kostka is a depth defenseman. Lazar should play in Calgary\’s next game. Lazar, 22, has 1 point (an assist) in 33 NHL games for the Sens this season. He had 4 points (3 goals and an assist) in 13 games for Binghamton (AHL) this season. He has 36 points (12 goals and 24 assists) in 176 career NHL games, all for the Sens. Kostka, 31, hasn\’t played in the NHL this season. He has 12 points (a goal and 11 assists) in 46 games with Binghamton (AHL) this season. He has 21 points (4 goals and 17 assists) in 85 career NHL games, with the Sens, the New York Rangers, the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Chicago Blackhawks and the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Sens didn\’t need Lazar anymore. They traded for forward Tommy Wingels. They also traded for winger Alex Burrows. Also, winger Viktor Stalberg was acquired. Getting a 2nd round pick for him was key. Jokkipakka can play some D this year. Jokkipakka, 25, has 6 points (a goal and 5 assists) in 38 games this season. He has 28 points (3 goals and 25 assists) in 147 career NHL games for the Flames and the Stars.

NHL trade review: Kings acquire Iginla from Avs

The Los Angeles Kings have acquired forward Jarome Iginla from the Colorado Avalanche in exchange for a conditional 4th round pick in the 2018 NHL draft. Let\’s get into details.
The Kings and GM Dean Lombardi were looking to acquire a winger after trading one in Dwight King. Getting Iginla can help them make the playoffs. They are a point out of the second wild card spot in the Western conference with 66 of them (a record of 30-27-6). There is exactly no risk. If the Kings miss the playoffs, they owe the Avs nothing (that\’s right, NOTHING). Iginla, 39, has 18 points (8 goals and 10 assists) in 61 games this season. He has 1,291 points (619 goals and 672 assists) in 1,535 career NHL games for the Avs, the Boston Bruins, the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Calgary Flames.
The Avs are in a rebuild. This is the first trade they\’ve made, since January when they dealt forward Cody McLeod to Nashville. They sit dead last in the NHL with just 37 points (an awful record of 17-41-3). Dealing Iginla isn\’t a surprise. GM Joe Sakic should\’ve gotten something unconditional, but he didn\’t. Iginla previously requested a trade, so Sakic might of wanted to at least grant his wish. We\’ll see if the Avs even attempt to re-sign Igina, who can be a UFA on July 1.

NHL trade review: Habs acquire King from Kings

The Montreal Canadiens have acquired winger Dwight King from the Los Angeles Kings (I know, King from Kings) in exchange for a conditional 4th round pick in the 2018 NHL draft. Let\’s get into details.
The Habs look to make the playoffs. They are first in the Atlantic division with 78 points (a record of 35-21-8). After trading center David Desharnais, the Habs were looking for another depth forward. King can help them out in the playoffs. They didn\’t give up much. King, 27, has 15 points (8 goals and 7 assists) in 63 games this season. He has 108 points (52 goals and 56 assists) in 348 career NHL games, all with the Kings.
The Kings didn\’t need King, after trading for winger Jarome Iginla. It was an ok job by GM Dean Lombardi to get some value out of King. I think it was the right move.

NHL trade review: Flyers acquire Filppula, Bolts get Streit, quickly flip him

The Tampa Bay Lightning have acquired defenseman Mark Streit from the Philadelphia Flyers in exchange for center Valtteri Filppula, a 4th round pick in the 2017 NHL draft and a conditional 2017 7th rounder. Let\’s get into details.
The Lightning are out of the playoffs this season. They are 5 points out of a playoff spot with 64 points (a record of 28-25-8). They traded goalie Ben Bishop. They also traded center Brian Boyle. Trading Filppula isn\’t a surprise, but they traded too much. They only received an almost 40 year old defenseman in Streit. They also traded away a couple of picks. But Streit will (probably) never play for the Bolts. They flipped him to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for a 2017 4th rounder. Pittsburgh needs a defenseman, even after acquiring Ron Hainsey. The Bolts got some value out of the pending UFA, though it\’s less than they gave up for him. Streit, 39, has 21 points (5 goals and 16 assists) in 49 games for the Flyers this season. He has 428 points (95 goals and 333 assists) in 765 career NHL games for the Flyers, the New York Islanders (who he once captained) and the Montreal Canadiens.
The Flyers sit just one point ahead of the Lightning with 65 points (a record of 29-26-7). GM Ron Hextall is trying to make the playoffs and acquire picks. Filppula is a solid center. The picks can help. I really like this trade for them. Filppula, 32, has 34 points (7 goals and 27 assists) in 59 games this season. He has 422 points (152 goals and 270 assists) in 775 career NHL games for the Detroit Red Wings and the Bolts.
