NHL Trade Review: Penguins get Marleau

From NBC Sports

The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired forward Patrick Marleau from the San Jose Sharks for a conditional 2021 third round pick. If Pittsburgh wins the Stanley Cup this year, the pick becomes a 2021 second rounder.

Marleau is the definition of a veteran. He is 40 years old, and has played over 1,700 games with over 1,000 points in his career. In his 22 year career, 20 were with San Jose. He has not produced in his return to to San Jose after a stint in Toronto. The team is terrible this year. Marleau is a pending UFA on a league minimum contract, so they can get a little bit more for him. While he has not won a Stanley Cup yet, this could be his last chance. The Penguins are a legitimate Stanley Cup contender. His experience gets him a better return. Getting a third, maybe second round pick for a 40 year old with 20 points this year is a really good deal for the Sharks. The Penguins don\’t need the pick, and Marleau can be like a Chris Kunitz type player for them.

Marleau, 40, has scored 10 goals with 10 assists for 20 points in 58 games for the Sharks this year. In his very long career for the Sharks and Toronto Maple Leafs Marleau has scored 561 goals with 625 assists for 1,186 points in 1,715 games.

NHL Trade Review: Canes get Trocheck for four players

The Carolina Hurricanes have acquired forward Vincent Trocheck from the Florida Panthers for forwards Erik Haula, Lucas Wallmark and Eetu Luostarinen, plus defenseman Chase Priskie.

Trocheck has been a solid second line center in his career for the Panthers. However, a fractured ankle suffered early last season has derailed his play, and he has not been the same player since. He is on an 82 game pace for 15 goals and 54 points this year, which is not good considering his 31 goal, 75 point season just two years ago. He will improve the Hurricanes\’ middle six regardless. They give up four players, but no big prospects, and two NHL players that are on expiring contracts. Haula will be a UFA, Wallmark an RFA. They don\’t give up any draft picks, either. Trocheck is not a great defensive center, though. After 2019-20, he has two more years left under contract with a cap hit of $4.75 million.

Trocheck, 26, has scored 10 goals with 26 assists for 36 points in 55 games this year. In his NHL career, all in Florida, Trocheck has scored 111 goals with 172 assists for 282 points in 420 games.

This return seems very low for the Panthers. Haula won\’t be on the team by July 1st. Wallmark is a decent bottom six center, but is a big step down from Trocheck. Neither Priskie or Luostarinen are big prospects. Haula scored 29 goals with Vegas two seasons ago, but like Trocheck, suffered a big injury, and has struggled since. He has been back down to third line production this year. Priskie was a former 6th rounder who did not sign with the Capitals and played four seasons at Quinnipiac instead. He is in the AHL currently. A 2017 2nd rounder, Luostarinen made his NHL debut this year but has been unimpressive in the AHL.

Haula, 28, has scored 12 goals with 10 assists for 22 points in 41 games for the Hurricanes this year. In his NHL career for the Hurricanes, Vegas Golden Knights and the Minnesota Wild, Haula has scored 85 goals with 88 assists for 173 points in 398 games.

Wallmark, 24, has scored 11 goals with 12 assists for 23 points in 60 games this season. In his NHL career, all in Carolina, Wallmark has scored 22 goals with 32 assists for 54 points in 160 games.

Priskie, 23, has scored six goals with 25 assists for 31 points in 52 games for the AHL\’s Charlotte Checkers this year. Last year for Quinnipiac, he scored 17 goals with 22 assists for 39 points in 36 games.

Luostarinen, 21, had one point, an assist, in eight NHL games this year. For Charlotte this season Luostarinen has eight goals with 17 assists for 25 points in 44 games.

NHL Trade Review: Islanders acquire Pageau

From the NY Post

The New York Islanders have acquired forward Jean-Gabriel Pageau from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a conditional 2020 1st round pick, a 2020 2nd round pick and a conditional 2022 3rd round pick. The 1st rounder will be a 2021 pick if the 2020 pick is top-3 overall. The Senators only get the 3rd rounder if the Islanders win the Stanley Cup this season.

Pageau is a middle-six center, but the Islanders desperately needed him. He plays a two-way game, and has a career high 24 goals already. However, he has nearly an 18% shooting percentage, about four percent higher than his previous career high. Also, he has had a big bump in ice time as the Senators have traded away many players in recent years. He is a rental, but the Islanders likely believe that they can re-sign him. Neither of the conditions include a re-signing condition. The Isles\’ bottom-six is horrible, and Pageau helps improve that. They still could use a winger. Pageau\’s own former teammate Tyler Ennis is very much an option. He should only cost a 4-5th round pick.

Pageau, 27, has scored 24 goals with 16 assists for 40 points in 60 games for the Senators this year. In his NHL career, all in Ottawa, Pageau has scored 87 goals with 95 assists for 182 points in 428 games.

The Senators are horrible. Pageau is a pending UFA and contract talks reportedly weren\’t going anywhere. Getting a first and a second rounder is a really, really good return. Pageau was playing top minutes for them but he is more like a third liner. The Senators have three first round picks now, and two- their own and San Jose\’s, will be top picks.

NHL Trade Review: Avs acquire Namestnikov

The Colorado Avalanche have acquired forward Vladislav Namestnikov from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for a 2021 4th round draft pick.

The Avs are hunting again for a forward. They missed out on Taylor Hall earlier this season, and were in the hunt for Chris Kreider. While it doesn\’t look like they\’ll get Kreider, they get a solid depth forward in Namestnikov. While he isn\’t on the level of Hall or Kreider, he is a decent third line winger. Namestnikov started the season with the Rangers, but was traded to Ottawa after two games. He has been decent for the Senators. A pending UFA, the return probably should have been higher. Especially after the team got a first and second rounder for Jean-Gabriel Pageau. While Pageau is a center, the difference between him and Namestnikov isn\’t that big. The Avs could sell a little at the deadline as well. Tyson Jost is rumored to potentially be on the way out.

Namestnikov, 27, has scored 13 goals with 12 assists for 25 points in 56 games for the Senators and New York Rangers this year. In his NHL career for the Senators, Rangers and Tampa Bay Lightning, Namestnikob has scored 79 goals with 104 assists for 183 points in 416 games.

NHL Trade Review: Oilers acquire Green

From the Detroit Free Press

The Edmonton Oilers have acquired defenseman Mike Green from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for forward Kyle Brodziak and a conditional 2020 4th round draft pick. If the Oilers make it to the Conference Final this year, and Green plays in at least half of their games, the pick is upgraded to a 2021 3rd rounder. The Red Wings also retained half of Green\’s salary.

The Oilers have had injury problems this year. Currently, Oscar Klefbom and Kris Russell are missing on defense. Green brings stability to the right side, even when Klefbom and Russell return. Green will slot in behind Adam Larsson and ahead of Ethan Bear and Matt Benning on the depth chart. Bear could be on the second pairing with Green on the third. Green also brings experience; with Klefbom and Russell out, Larsson is the only other Oilers defenseman over the age of 25. A 15 year veteran, Green finished second in Norris voting two years in a row, and scored 30 goals one of those years, but those days are long behind him. Green\’s scoring has declined with age, and so has his defense. In five years with Detroit, Green has never been a plus player, with a career worst -32 rating this season. Plus, he is a pending UFA, explaining his low return.

Green, 34, has three goals with eight assists for 11 points in 48 games for the Red Wings this year. In his NHL career for the Red Wings and Washington Capitals Green has scored 150 goals with 351 assists for 501 points in 878 games.

The Red Wings should have gotten more for Green. They retain half of Green\’s salary, and take on Brodziak\’s contract. All they get in return is a 4th rounder. It can upgrade to a 3rd, but that is unlikely. Brodziak hasn\’t played a game in nearly a year. He has retired due to a degenerative back issue that left him unable to play. Once a bottom six defensive center, Brodziak will have a $1.15 million cap hit for the rest of the season.

Brodziak, 35, scored 129 goals with 167 assists for 296 points in 917 games in his career for the Oilers, Minnesota Wild and St. Louis Blues.
